Considered an Intangible Cultural Asset of Japan, Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjitsu is a traditional and comprehensive school of Bujutsu (martial arts), emphasizing the importance of developing a strong martial spirit and a healthy body. Training methods cover all aspects of the original warriors’ fighting methods through kata (practice forms) and include:


  • Kenjitsu (swordsmanship)
  • Iaijutsu (sword-drawing)
  • Bojutsu (6 ft staff techniques)
  • Naginatajutsu (halberd techniques)
  • Ryotojutsu (two-sword techniques)
  • Kodachijutsu (short sword techniques)
  • Sojutsu (spearmanship)
  • Jujutsu (unarmed techniques)
  • Shurikenjutsu (Spike-throwing techniques)


The practice also includes all aspects of military strategy, as well as tenmon chiri fusui (based on yin/yang and five-element theory).


Odate Sensei is a US representative for Katori Shinto-Ryu. He is a martial artist, actor, and producer, known for his appearances in 

“The Last Samurai,” “Dragonball Evolution,” “Letters from Iwo Jima” and “Falcon Rising.”
